Bihar BTSC JE Selection Process 2026

The selection for Junior Engineers in Civil/Mechanical/Electrical disciplines will be based on two stages:

  • Written Exam (75 marks): All questions in the written competitive examination will be objective type multiple-choice questions. To be called for the next stage, candidates must clear the written test.
  • Work Experience (25 marks): For claiming preference based on contractual service as a Junior Engineer or equivalent post, work experience will be considered valid if candidates work under the Government of Bihar/Central Government or any undertaking, corporation, body, authority, or autonomous body.

Bihar BTSC JE Exam Pattern 2026

The exam pattern for the BTSC Junior Engineer post is as follows:

  • There are 100 questions asked from the subject disciplines
  • The exam will be conducted in computer based test
  • +1 mark for each correct answer.
  • -0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
  • The duration of the exam is 2 hours

Indian Polity
Indian Polity covers the Constitution of India, its features, preamble, fundamental rights and duties, directive principles of state policy, parliamentary system, judiciary, center–state relations, and important constitutional bodies.

Science and Technology

Civil and Structural EngineeringBuilding Materials
This section covers the physical and chemical properties of construction materials, their classification, and standard tests used to determine quality and suitability. It also includes the uses and manufacturing or quarrying processes of various materials. Candidates must study asbestos products, timber and wood-based products, laminates, paints, and varnishes, along with their properties, applications, and advantages in construction works.

Estimating, Costing and Valuation
This subject focuses on estimation techniques and the glossary of technical terms commonly used in civil engineering works. It includes analysis of rates and detailed study of items of work such as earthwork, brick work (both modular and traditional bricks), RCC work, shuttering, timber work, painting, flooring, plastering, water tanks, and bar bending schedules.
The valuation part covers value and cost concepts, scrap value, salvage value, assessed value, sinking fund, depreciation, obsolescence, and different methods of valuation.

Surveying
Surveying includes the principles of surveying, measurement of distances, and chain surveying. It also covers the working of the prismatic compass, local attraction, and plane table surveying. Other important topics are adjustment of theodolite, leveling, and definitions of leveling terms. Candidates must also study contouring, curvature and refraction corrections, temporary and permanent adjustments of dumpy level, tachometric survey, and advanced surveying equipment.

Soil Mechanics
Soil Mechanics deals with the origin of soil, phase diagram, and important definitions such as void ratio. It includes the density index and interrelationship of soil parameters, grain size distribution curves and their uses, and index properties of soils.
Key topics include Atterberg’s limits, ISI soil classification, plasticity chart, permeability of soil, triaxial test, soil compaction, laboratory compaction test, maximum dry density, optimum moisture content, bearing capacity of soils, and standard penetration test (SPT).

Hydraulics
Hydraulics covers properties of fluids, hydrostatics, and measurement of flow. It includes Bernoulli’s theorem and its applications, flow through pipes, and flow in open channels. The subject also deals with weirs, flumes, spillways, pumps, and turbines.

Irrigation Engineering
This section includes the definition, necessity, and benefits of irrigation, along with ill effects of irrigation. It covers types and methods of irrigation and hydrology, including measurement of rainfall.
Important topics are water requirement of crops, duty, delta, base period, Kharif and Rabi crops, command area, time factor, crop ratio, overlap allowance, and irrigation efficiencies.
It also includes types of canals, weirs and barrages, failure of weirs and permeable foundations, slit and scour, Kennedy’s theory of critical velocity, Lacey’s theory of uniform flow, floods and flood control, water logging and preventive measures, land reclamation, soil fertility factors, and major irrigation projects in India.

Transportation Engineering
Transportation Engineering covers highway engineering, including cross-sectional elements, geometric design, and types of pavements. It includes pavement materials such as aggregates and bitumen, and design of flexible and rigid pavements, including WBM, WMM, and gravel roads.
Other topics include bituminous construction, rigid pavement joints, railway engineering, components of permanent way such as sleepers, ballast, fixtures, and fastenings, and track geometry.
Traffic engineering includes traffic surveys, speed–flow–density relationships, intersections and interchanges, traffic signals, traffic operation, traffic signs and road markings, and road safety.

Environmental Engineering
Environmental Engineering includes quality of water, sources of water supply, water purification, and distribution systems. It covers the need for sanitation, sewerage systems, circular and oval sewers, sewer appurtenances, and sewage treatment methods.
Other topics include surface water drainage, solid waste management (types, effects, and engineered management systems), air pollution (pollutants, causes, effects, and control), and noise pollution (causes, health effects, and control).

Theory of Structures
This subject includes elasticity constants and types of beams, both determinate and indeterminate. It covers bending moment and shear force diagrams for simply supported, cantilever, and overhanging beams.
Other important topics are moment of area, moment of inertia for rectangular and circular sections, chimneys, dams, retaining walls, eccentric loading, slope deflection of beams, critical load on columns, and torsion of circular sections.

Concrete Technology
Concrete Technology deals with the properties, advantages, and uses of concrete. It includes cement and aggregates, importance of water quality, water–cement ratio, workability, and mix design.
The subject also covers storage, batching, mixing, placement, compaction, finishing, and curing of concrete, quality control, hot weather and cold weather concreting, and repair and maintenance of concrete structures.

RCC Design
RCC Design includes flexural strength, shear strength, and bond strength of RCC beams. It covers design of singly and doubly reinforced beams, cantilever beams, T-beams, lintels, one-way and two-way slabs, and isolated footings.
It also includes reinforced brick work, columns, staircases, retaining walls, and water tanks. Questions may be based on both Limit State Method and Working Stress Method.

Steel Design
Steel Design covers the design and construction of steel structures, including steel columns, steel beams, roof trusses, and plate girders.
Electrical EngineeringBasic Electrical Engineering
This section covers Ohm’s Law and its applications, along with a detailed study of AC and DC circuits.
